Erasmus+ for Study – Student Mobility for Study

The Erasmus+ for Study programme allows students to undertake mobility for study purposes of between 3 and 12 months at a Higher Education Institution abroad from the second year of their course of study.

It is possible to carry out the mobility at a Higher Education Institution in one of the countries participating in the Erasmus+ programme that has an ECHE (https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/resources-and-tools/erasmus-charter-for-higher-education) or at a Higher Education Institution in a Partner Country, with which the home institution has signed an Interinstitutional Agreement.

To take part in the call for applications, which allows financial support for mobility, the student must be regularly enrolled at the university and the study period abroad must be an integral part of his/her career. Mobility includes study, internship (if sponsored by the host university) and thesis research with the support of a co-relator at the host university. The home institution gives full recognition to the activity carried out and certified, using the ECTS system. In addition, the mobility period is recorded in the student's career and in the Diploma Supplement.

Study mobility allows students to have a career-enriching experience confronting a different reality in foreign universities and learning or improving a new language. Through study mobility it is possible to expand one's network of academic and professional contacts, foster interpersonal relationships, get to know new realities and explore new places.

The Department has been a member of the Erasmus programme since the 2006/2007 academic year, giving rise to a network of agreements that has developed over the years to a current number of 75 agreements, including agreements with universities outside Europe. Among these it is necessary to mention the inter-institutional agreement with the University of Carthage in Tunisia, which allows students enrolled in the double degree course in Planning and Policies for the City, Environment and Landscape to obtain a scholarship to support the mandatory period of study for one semester at the foreign university.

In addition, the Department has been participating for years in the Erasmus+ Key Action 171 International Credit Mobility, which has also made it possible to finance scholarships for students from the University of Carthage who come to spend a semester of mobility at the Department in order to obtain a double degree.

Starting in the academic year 2023/24, the Erasmus+ for Study Programme has been enriched with a new programme that supports the implementation of short-term, Blended Intensive Programme mobilities involving a part of study at a distance and a part of participation face-to-face. The Department immediately responded to this new programme through the participation of some students and the President of the Urban Planning degree course in a Workshop organised by a European partner institute in Portugal in 2024. During the academic year 2024/25, the Department was a protagonist of this new type of mobility by obtaining funds to organise a Blended Intensive Programme entitled ‘Augmented Pop-Up Stories’, realised by the President of the degree course in Design. The face-to-face part of this programme ended in Alghero in April 2025 with the participation of lecturers and students from two European institutions, one French and one Portuguese.
