PEI | Project and Environmental Infrastructure – Focus Accessibility

Research activities

The research activities form an integral part of the Project and Environmental Infrastructures (PIA) Laboratory. Topics focus particularly on the planning and design of infrastructure and mobility services, adopting an integrated approach that considers their mutual influence on the organisation and quality of urban space and human activities.

The reorganisation of travel behaviours, transport infrastructure and services provides an opportunity to reconsider urban spaces and how they are used through transport and land use choices that are consistent with the characteristics of urban and territorial contexts and sustainability principles. In this way, the mobility project contributes to the design of complex urban systems — living environments incorporating spaces, structures and services where connecting elements are integrated with public functions. The result is more liveable places offering multiple opportunities and alternatives and expanding individuals' capabilities to access and participate in urban life.

Design reflections at different scales will address the following:

  • The redevelopment of urban spaces and transport systems
  • Green and blue infrastructure that connects ecosystem services
  • The measurement and enhancement of 'mobility capital'
  • New patterns of behaviour and organisation of daily life, (modes of transport, location and functioning of urban activities and services)
  • The impact of sustainable mobility on the urban environment and quality of life (indicators, measurments and design recomandations)

This approach aims to move beyond a sector-specific vision of the transport system, which focuses on functionality and performance, and reveal the urban potential of mobility planning. This provides an opportunity to create conditions that shape the space and foster connections between its components by increasing access, usage, and social interaction.
