Frankenstein’s laboratory is an archetype of the technological imagination: an isolated, clandestine, and cognitively opaque environment. Following Latour’s concept of the “black box,” the laboratory conceals procedures and responsibilities, creating an image of science as dangerous and uncontrolled. Through a comparison between Frankenstein’s laboratory and the evolution of scientific infrastructure, we will examine how architectural configurations influence the shape perceptions of science.
