LEAP | International Laboratory for the Environmental and Architectural Project

The activity of the International Laboratory for the Environmental and Architectural Project promotes and disseminates research results in the field of urban and territorial project development, with particular attention to the environmental dimension and interdisciplinarity. The research involves different technical and contextual knowledge, offering a unified vision of the project across all its scales.
Activities are carried out through didactic and thesis laboratories, summer schools, scientific publications, and consulting for local authorities. LEAP promotes a project-oriented approach that pays specific attention to three significant dimensions:
Environmental dimension. The inseparability between city and territory does not simply imply the diffusion of the city into the territory, but rather an expansion of inhabiting towards places that are external to the compact urban core, yet fundamental to collective identity. The territory and its environmental processes become part of urban organization.
Collective dimension. This concerns the objectives of the project, its coherence with the expectations and aspirations of local communities, and the recognition of the project as a cooperative and collective action.
Dimension of openness to possibilities. This requirement highlights the need for the project not to be constructed in a definitive way, but as a process that opens up different possibilities for future generations.
LEAP addresses the theme of inhabiting at architectural, urban, and territorial scales, engaging with the structural matrices of the territory as well as with the vulnerabilities and environmental challenges of local contexts. Research topics range from climate change and risk in extreme coastal environments, to the challenges of urban regeneration in both high- and low-density contexts, the reorganization of public spaces in marginal areas, the conversion of brownfield sites, and the redevelopment of coastal areas characterized by tourism.
