Strategie biomimetiche per problemi complessi in architettura e ingegneria

Docente responsabile: Margherita Solci

1 CFR, 5 ore - II semestre

The series of lectures and activities will explore different perspectives on mechanical structures and their mathematical modelling, with applications in both biological and engineering contexts. The aim is to develop a common perspective on the modelling of natural phenomena and the design of
engineered materials, also considering the challenges posed by climate change and increasing atmospheric CO₂ concentrations, highlighting the role of mathematical and computational tools and the mutual influence between biological inspiration and engineering applications.
Examples will include the design of ultralight materials inspired by the structural and mechanical properties of spider webs, illustrating how principles observed in natural systems can inform the development of innovative architectural and engineering structures.
Further examples will explore the integration of living systems, such as bacteria and fungi, into construction materials, exploiting their natural functions to develop more sustainable, durable and intelligent structures, including CO₂ capture, self-healing and sensing.
